About

This Blog is a collection of information in support of you making an informed decision about whether or not to support the Label GMO's movement in California. I am biased in the direction of supporting this movement, and will be providing information views with that goal in mind.

One of the most disturbing things about genetically modified foods is the fact that their relatively recent development precludes the possibility of being able to study their long term effects. The research that has been done does not look very good in favor of GMO's. In fact, there is increasing evidence popping up all over the place that point to a host of problems resulting from the creation, distribution and management of GMO's, in everything from the local environments where GMO crops are grown to the effects when foodstuffs created from these ingredients are ingested.

Even if one was to reject the wealth of evidence that points to the harmfulness of GMO's as unproven, the fact remains that there is a high possibility of health problems, and either way, people have the right to know whether the foods they are feeding themselves and their families contain GMO ingredients. Proponents of GMO foods claim that they are totally safe, with no possibility of negative side effects, so many in the Label GMO's movement are asking why these same companies are so resistant to these foods being clearly labeled. Think about it like this: in the year 1990, nutritional labels became mandatory for most packaged foods. Now, you can hardly buy any food product that does not contain a nutritional label. This was implemented as part of a much broader attempt to better educate and inform the public as to what they were putting in their mouths. Now, we have the opportunity to sign into law a mandate that would include whether or not the food contains any genetically modified ingredients. As the public becomes more informed, this will hopefully lead to more and more consumer pressure against these companies and their truly monstrous (as you will see in the videos page) practices.

GMO's are, in a lot of ways, a symbol of the arrogance and short-sightedness of modern man and the left-brained civilization we have created. We constantly think that we can conquer, outsmart, dominate, and modify nature to our will, ignoring the reams of evidence to the contrary. We then react with open mouthed suprise when the natural consequences arise. For example, short-sighted farmers jumped at the chance to plant Roundup Ready soy, corn and cotton in the late 90's. Now, a little more than a decade later, despite extremely heavy use of Roundup in these crops, (and a huge amount of environmental damage as a result of this "safe, quickly biodegrading pesticide") farmers are faced with a new and predictable threat to their bottom line: Roundup resistant Superweeds! Does this make them question their logic and consider the possibility that their original hypothesis may be flawed? Not at all. Their idea? Pull out one of Monsanto's ol' reliables from the Vietnam war: a chemical used in agent orange to defoliate the areas around US military bases, and in other places worldwide to disrupt enemy food supplies. Of course, Monsanto's promoters laud this connection as a scare tactic, since this is an ingredient of agent orange that has been found to be, get this, non harmful to humans. I suppose the next step will be to create nuclear radiation-resistent crops, and just nuke the fields once or twice a growing season.

Interestingly, Europe as a whole has remained staunchly opposed to anything GMO related, and for that reason, companies that enthusiastically use GMO's in everything they can in America have limited or curtailed completely their use in products intended for the European market. For that reason, education and awareness-raising efforts are extremely important so that these same companies get a similar pushback from the American people.
